Candle Fire Safety

12/16/2022 (Permalink)

Wreath Facts

Candles bring the perfect holiday scent to any home and make great gifts to give to any person. Although they bring great joy to people everywhere during the holiday season, it is important to note how to properly and safely use candles. According to the NFPA (National Fire Prevention Association) "Candle fires peak in December and January with 11 percent of house fires in each of these months."

SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Counties is 'Faster to Any Disaster' and trained to handle any size fire remediation job, but the first step you can take is to take proper precaution when using candles. Here are some tips from the NFPA.

  • Use candle holders that are sturdy, and won’t tip over easily.
  • Put candle holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface.
  • Light candles carefully. Keep your hair and any loose clothing away from the flame.
  • Don’t burn a candle all the way down — put it out before it gets too close to the holder or container.
  • Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home.
  • Have flashlights and battery-powered lighting ready to use during a power outage. Never use candles.

While all of these tips can help prevent a house fire this holiday season, we understand that disaster can strike at any time. Call the professionals at SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Counties at (864)229-6610 for services 24/7.

Containment Importance

12/16/2022 (Permalink)

There are two different definitions of containment, one being "the action of keeping something harmful under control" and the other being "the action or policy of preventing the expansion of a hostile influence."

At SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Counties, we set up containment during any mitigation or remediation job for both of these reasons, depending on the cause of loss. Sometimes, containment is set in order to protect the contents from the work taking place around it. Other times, containment is set in order to protect the rest of the home or business from either the work being done or the cause of loss.

Either way, our production crew know how important it is to keep the structure and its contents safe from any potential toxins, pollution, or debris done from the mitigation and remediation process.

Our number one goal on any job, is to leave the home or business in as close to pre loss condition as possible.

Why Do You Need a Water Mitigation Company?

Why Do You Need a Water Mitigation Company?

If you’re like most homeowners in the Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick County areas, you want to take care of home maintenance on your own. After all, who wants to pay for a repair service when you can just do it yourself? In some cases, that might be the best thing to do, but it’s also important to consult a professional restoration company when the need arises.

As a water mitigation company in Greenwood, SC potential customers can sometimes call back and decide to do the clean up themselves but many have called back with new problems. Lost time, costly do-it-yourself products, and frustration can be avoided by using a professional.

Why use a Water Damage  Restoration and Repair Company?

  • Uncover hidden moisture problems. When it comes to water damage, there’s often more than meets the eyes. Materials like hardwoods and drywall, are porous, so they absorb water. Moisture can cause the materials to expand, or possibly trap moisture, allowing it to foster mold growth. A water mitigation company has the equipment to both detect and dry these materials.

  • Prevent future mold growth. Mold spores are everywhere, but they don’t pose much of a threat until they are exposed to moisture. When water damage isn’t adequately addressed, it can increase the chances of mold growth. Our team can extract and dry the water, plus we apply an antimicrobial to deter mold.

  • Equipment and Expertise to remove contaminated water. Not all water damage is equal. Water can occasionally be extremely contaminated (such as floodwater or sewage) and may pose health risks. In these cases, protective gear and specific processes are required for cleaning up the damage to reduce exposure. Our experienced technicians are equipped and certified to handle these situations.

Water damage can come in many different forms and it’s also important to know when things are beyond your control. No matter the situation, SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Counties here to help.

Contact us at 864-229-6610 for 24/7 Water Damage Mitigation, Repair, and Post Damage Reconstruction.

Successfully Removing Mold from Your Home

5/13/2022 (Permalink)

Let review the facts about mold.

Mold spores are around us everyday. They're a living organism that participate in our ecosystem. When they have a habitat that causes them to colonize in such numbers that the fuzzy green and black stuff starts to show is when we typically get worried.

Mold thrives in a humid, warm environment. That's why when water damage has been left for too long we see evidence of it.

Mold can cause health effects and damage to your property. When you call a mold specialist at SERVPRO, we will follow the following basic steps to remediate and treat your issue.

  1. Contain the area and place powerful air scrubbers. These machine draw the contaminated air out and filter through several layers of HEPA filters before sending clean air back into the room.
  2. Remove items such as drywall, carpet, and insulation that show evidence of colonizing.
  3. HEPA vacuum and clean all exposed areas with an anti-microbial disinfectant.
  4. Clean and disinfect ductwork to remove any spore that may have traveled through the HVAC system.

Finally, cleaning with bleach IS NOT an acceptable way to remove mold!! Bleach is not an antimicrobial disinfectant and only masks the issue for a short time before it returns. If you think you have an issue that concerns you, always call a mold remediation specialist for guidance.

April Showers Bring Water Damages By The Hour

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

As one of the wettest months in the year, April is known for its rainy days and perpetual showers. Though spring is officially here, we hardly get to enjoy the nice weather until late in the month or on those rare days when the weather allows some sunshine to peek through the clouds.

One thing we can consistently expect from April is the amount of water damage claims our teams respond to. Though the after effects of water damage are all the same. the causes can vary depending on where the damage takes place. To minimize the risk of water in your home or office, here are a few of the top causes of spring water damage:

1. Flooding

Whether because of heavy rains, a low water table, or leaks and cracks in your, flooding is the top cause of spring water damage. Waterproofing your basement and properly weather-sealing doors and windows can help in minimizing the risk of water damage in your home.

2. Roof Leaks and Drain Back-Ups

Second to noticing cracks in your foundations, this can be one of the trickiest to get ahead on, mainly because most of us don’t spend much time out on our roofs. Periodically checking your roof and gutters is key to getting ahead of leaks and drain backups that can seep into your home.

3. Frozen Pipes

Last, but not least — frozen pipes. You may think frozen pipes are only a danger in the colder months, but the truth is, plenty of water damage claims happen when these pipes defrost in the warmer months. That’s because outside faucets and water irrigation systems that were shut off during the colder months, yet not properly insulated, begin to leak into your home once it is turned on. So instead of only watering your lawn, you may see these pipes have also watered your indoor living space.

There are plenty of other causes of water damage ranging from leaking AC units, downed trees, and even heavy storms. Whatever the cause, SERVPRO of Greenwood is only a call away.

The Storm Damage Restoration Process: What To Expect

4/1/2022 (Permalink)

If a storm damaged your home , you might be worried about the storm restoration process. You may wonder how anyone can fix all that water damage or what happens if they must tear out a wall.

It’s understandable that you would worry about this. After all, restoration can seem daunting to the uninitiated. Luckily, understanding the steps can help calm your nerves. While all projects are unique, these are the basic steps to expect:

  1. Initial damage control
  2. Removal of damaged materials
  3. A drying period
  4. Rebuilding

Each of these steps is important and should be done by experienced and trusted professionals. Below is a closer look at each stage:

Initial Damage Control

Before your restoration crew can do anything else, they must extract the water from your home. This is the first step in stopping further water damage and keeping needed repairs to a minimum. It’s essential to call a storm restoration company as soon as possible after a flood to get this process going.

Removal of Damaged Materials

Once the water is out of the way, the contractors can survey the damage and decide what they need to tear out. They may decide to make a flood cut, which prevents mold by removing a section of wall above the flood line. The professionals will properly dispose of damaged materials to keep your home safe.

A Drying Period

The third step can be the most difficult for anxious homeowners. The affected area must be allowed to dry out, which can take some time. Be patient; you’re almost done.

Rebuilding

After the area is dry, the professionals can start rebuilding the damaged structures. Great companies can make sure it looks as good as or better than before.

If a flood damages your home, call a trusted storm restoration company immediately. They can get rid of the water, tear out damaged walls, and make it look like water damage never happened. 864-229-6610

6 Signs of Plumbing Trouble

3/26/2022 (Permalink)

6 Symptoms of Plumbing Issues

If you run a business the last thing you want to deal with is a problem with your plumbing system. If you experience a blocked sewer, toilet overflow or a pipe break, you should contact a commercial restoration service as soon as possible. Before you have to take that step, you can familiarize yourself with these common signs of trouble.

Chronic Drain Clogging

If you experience clogs on a regular basis, it could be a sign of a problem with your cast-iron sewer lines. After 25 years, these lines can deteriorate and fail. A blocked sewer can lead to more damaging and costly issues, so it’s a good idea to address it right away.

Sewer Gas Smell

Your nose may give you another indication of trouble with your sewer lines. If you notice the odor of sewer gas, you should get your sewer system examined for damage or failure.

Continuous Flushing

A toilet overflow is a messy situation for any business. When commercial toilets won’t stop flushing, it is usually a problem with the flushometer. Most commonly, the gasket needs to be cleaned out or replaced.

Bulging Walls and Ceilings

Pipe breaks can occur when clogs or pinhole leaks go unaddressed. If you notice any swelling or protrusions in your walls or ceiling tiles, this may be the reason.

Water Stains

Another noticeable sign that water is building up in the walls is discoloration. By the time you see these stains, the leak or break is already fairly advanced and requires swift attention.

Foundation Cracks

A crack in your building’s foundation can start from root intrusion into a weak point, but once established, can expand to larger cracks. In addition to the structural damage they cause, foundation cracks can wreak havoc on water and sewage systems.
As a business owner, you don’t want to wait for a blocked sewer or pipe break to address problems in your plumbing system. By being familiar with these warning signs, you can deal with plumbing issues before they get serious.

Flood Insurance for Commercial Buildings

3/24/2022 (Permalink)

About 25% of businesses do not reopen after a disaster. One of the most common disasters that can affect a business is a flood. 98% of counties in the United States have been impacted by a flood event. There are some steps that you can take to help prevent your business from being part of that statistic. For example, you can get flood insurance. According to FEMA one inch of water can cause over $25k in damage to your home so, imagine the costs when your business is involved. SERVPRO of Greenwood understands that recovering from a loss like that can be difficult and want to make sure that we can help our community members to better understand their options and how they can get help.

Most standard commercial insurance policies do not cover flood losses. Flood insurance is offered through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP, run by FEMA. It is important to note that the NFIP does NOT sell flood insurance. You must purchase the insurance through your insurance provider. The rates for these programs are set by the NFIP and a dependent on whether you live in a flood plain, the risk of flooding in your area, the building’s age, and the building’s construction.

There are two kinds of flood insurance. Building property insurance covers the actual building, and personal property insurance covers the contents inside of the building. The NFIP recommends that you get both policies. Be sure to plan ahead and don’t expect to be able to get coverage immediately before a potential disaster event because there is a 30-day waiting period before your policies will go into effect.

SERVPRO of Greenwood cares about our community and we want you to be protected! Be sure to reach out to your insurance agent to discuss with them your coverage options for flood insurance. Should your place of business suffer from flood damage our team of professionals are ready for your call, and we can work directly with your insurance provider to help make the already difficult process of recovering from a disaster as easy as we can.

SERVPRO responds to emergency calls 24-hours a day.  We work with homeowners and insurance adjusters to restore a damaged property to preloss condition.

Every restoration project is unique, but our process typically involves the following steps.

Step 1: Emergency Dispatch or Scheduling an Estimate

We dispatch when you call us, 24-hours a day, every day of the week.  Our emergency dispatch service includes water damage, biohazard cleanup, and emergency services to help secure a property like board-up and roof tarping.

Clients in need of non-emergency services can still call us at any time to schedule an estimate.  Some estimates can be done quickly online, and others will require us to visit a property to perform an inspection.  Damage restoration estimates are free.

Step 2: Cleanup and Mitigation

This step involves cleaning up the damage the property has experienced.

While our technicians are cleaning a property, our office staff is also busy at work.  Each of our clients is assigned a Project Coordinator that will work with each insurance adjuster to help process the insurance claim.

Step 3: Reconstruction

If a property suffered extensive damage and required demolition, then our reconstruction team repairs everything necessary to make any damage “Like it never even happened.”  This portion of the project begins immediately after the mitigation has been completed and is typically approved as part of the insurance claim.

Realtors Worst Nightmare

3/23/2022 (Permalink)

We receive numerous calls this time of year from people who are trying to sell their house but need to have mold remediation done before the interested buyer will sign the contract.

Here are some things you need to know when it comes to mold remediation on the house you are trying to sell:

  • Address the Source - If the mold is coming from a leaking hot water heater, no matter how many times we come out to remediate the mold, if the leaking hot water heater does not get fixed, the mold will keep returning.
  • Depending on the severity of the mold that is present, it may be necessary to have an Industrial Hygienist come in to test for the types of mold present as well as how high of a count of mold spores are present. Our general rule of thumb is if you have a span of more than 10 square feet of mold, you probably need to have mold testing done.  Having this information will allow us  to take the necessary steps to get your home back to preloss condition.  The final step is to have the Industrial Hygienist come back out and test again to ensure that we have brought the mold spore count back down to an acceptable level.
  • We do not test for mold. As a professional mold remediation company, it would present a conflict of interest if we were also the Industrial Hygienist that came in behind ourselves to test the site and claim it as being cleared.  We want to avoid any appearance of false test results to clear our own work.

Taking the points listed above into consideration, please be sure to allow for enough time for each step as well as the Mold Remediation Process.

Preventing Bathroom Water Damage

3/23/2022 (Permalink)

Bathrooms are arguably the place where the most water is used in your household. As such, the likelihood of water damage occurring or at least starting from this room is pretty high. We wanted to give you some tips on how to help prevent water damage from happening in your bathroom!

Repair cracked, broken, or missing tiles – If there are cracks or missing tiles in your bathroom, these are spots where water has much easier access to the rest of your house and can get behind walls and under floors faster than if that tile barrier was still functioning.

Exhaust Fan – Make sure that whenever you use the shower that you turn on your exhaust fan. This fan helps to pull out any extra moisture in the air from the steam in your shower and stops it from building up on your walls and ceilings. This is crucial to helping prevent mold growth in your home.

Bathmats – While used for safety as well, having bathmats on your floor can help prevent water from building up around your tub or shower. Just make sure if they get overly wet that you move them and dry them out, and don’t leave them soggy on the floor or it defeats the purpose entirely.

Shower Curtain Liners – Shower curtains usually come with a decorative piece as well as a liner that is meant to go inside the tub. Make sure that before you shower this liner is inside the tub and not hanging out of it, otherwise water can run off the curtain and straight onto your floors!

Regular inspections – You should inspect your valves in all of your water fixtures regularly for proper function as well as making sure there are no leaks. Additionally, a general inspection of the floors and walls to ensure there are no water spots or stains.

There’s always the possibility of unavoidable water damage, but with these tips hopefully you can help to mitigate the damage and lower the chances of anything severe happening. While no one likes water damage, we’d love to help you deal with yours. We’re here to help 24/7, 365 days a year. 864-229-6610

Water Damage to Hard Wood Floors

3/23/2022 (Permalink)

When your home experiences water damage, besides the structural concerns, one of the biggest can definitely be your hardwood floors. Hardwood floors are expensive and add both cosmetic and monetary value to your home so, if possible, you obviously want to try and avoid ripping them out and replacing them.

With the correct equipment and training it is possible to save your floors from having to be removed, so it is imperative that you call a professional restoration company like us here at SERVPRO of Greenwood.

There are multiple factors that can play a part in our ability to restore your floors to preloss conditions:

Moisture Levels – Hardwood floors have a very low moisture content. When water pools on them for long periods of time the moisture gets soaked into the wood and can take weeks to dry out on its own. This can cause the wood to buckle, have raised edges or have the panels separate from each other.

Time – The type of wood in question plays a role in how quickly water is absorbed and then dried out. Wood rot happens when microbial growth in water is left without treatment in wood and begins to break down the wood. The faster that the water damage to your hardwood floors is addressed the more likely we are able to restore your floors and not have to replace them.

Drying Methods – Both the kinds of woods used as well as the installation methods play a part in the decision of which drying method should be used to dry out your floors. Specialized equipment like drying mats can be used to dry large portions of your flooring at a time helping to speed up the process and ensure moisture readings are at the correct levels. Using the installation methods, wood density, and other factors, our trained technicians will determine just how long the mats should be left in place.

As you can see, there are quite a few factors that decide whether or not you will have to replace your expensive hardwood floors or not, and that it’s best left to the professionals to handle to help increase your odds of restoration. So, if you find yourself in need of water damage restoration, don’t delay and give us a call asap. Our team is waiting to see how we can help you today.

Why Professional Restoration Is a Wise Choice

3/23/2022 (Permalink)

There are certain things that every homeowner worries about at one time or another. Among these is the possibility of falling victim to a natural disaster like a fire or flood. While these circumstances always remain a possibility with the appropriate conditions, internal water emergencies are often far more likely and frequent than any more detrimental disasters.

While water damage to your  home might come from several different sources, cleaning up this damage and restoring its effects is a similar process across the board. Many homeowners mistakenly believe that even moderate water emergencies can get taken care of with conventional drying techniques and that the problem is in the past. Unfortunately, without properly cleaning up water damage and drying the area thoroughly, you could be allowing worsening losses to occur.

Fortunately, our SERVPRO technicians get trained to handle all manner of water emergencies and ensure that the job gets done right. This restoration process begins with a thorough inspection of the immediate damage. We also use thermal imagery to inspect the areas that are out of the line of sight for persistent moisture, and a broader range of damage you could not initially tell was there.

Working quickly to dry the area and clean up the mess are both standard practices of our SERVPRO professionals. Once the site has gotten sufficiently dried using air movers and dehumidification equipment, a better inspection can occur with your home's structural components and building materials to ensure that they are as strong and stable as they should be. Overly damaged materials might require removal and reinstallation to complete the restoration process.

Water damage in your home might come from many potential sources, but overcoming the effects is rarely something that you should handle on your own. Even smaller-scale water damage can have severe impacts on your home if the appropriate, thorough measures do not get taken to ensure the area is cleaned and dried adequately. Trust our SERVPRO  technicians to help you through every possible effect of water damage. You can reach us anything by calling 864-229-6610.

What to do before a thunderstorm!

3/22/2022 (Permalink)

Thunderstorms can be dangerous and not taken for granted. Every thunderstorm produces lightning and other hazardous weather conditions, which can include tornadoes, strong winds, hail, and flash flooding.

In our area we tend to get a mix of heavy rain and dry thunderstorms. Below are great tips from the READY to help prepare you for what to do before, during, and after a thunderstorm.

What to do before a thunderstorm

  • To begin preparing, you should build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan.
  • Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
  • Postpone outdoor activities.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
  • Get inside a home, building, or hard-top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  • Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades, or curtains.
  • Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.
  • Lightning Risk Reduction When Outdoors

SERVPRO of Greenwood urges each and every one of you to PREPARE before a thunderstorm comes. And whenever they do come, SERVPRO of Greenwood will be here to help. 864-229-6610

Are the Ducts in your Business Clean?

3/22/2022 (Permalink)

Did you know that investing in regular air duct cleaning can reduce indoor allergens like dust, pollen, and pet dander?  Air duct cleaning is vital to the cleanliness of the air you breathe in.

Since the ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality, inspecting the ductwork in your home or business should be a high priority. In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty ducts can circulate odors and contaminants such as mold and irritating dust throughout your building or home.

SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick County provides commercial and residential air duct cleaning that can improve the air quality in your home or business.

How often do you need your air ducts cleaned?

It is recommended to get your air ducts cleaned every three to five years.  However, if you have elderly family members, pets, allergies, or young children it may be beneficial to clean your air ducts more often.  If you see a lot of dust gathering on furniture just after cleaning, that could be one sign that your air ducts need cleaning.

Our Duct Cleaning Process

  • The process begins by using patented equipment including a roto-scraper, which aromatically adapts to the shape and diameter of the duct while traveling through the duct, removing debris and dirt before vacuuming begins
  • Next, powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfer the debris from the ducting to a collection bag.
  • Air is then filtered through a HEPA filtration system removing 99.97 percent of particles in the air-stream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the environment clean.
  • As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.
  • Always have a replacement filter on hand so that we may change them out at the time of service.

If you have questions about air duct cleaning services for your home or business please give us a call at SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick County 864-229-6610

Cleaning Tips for Outside your Home Friendly SERVPRO

3/22/2022 (Permalink)

With Spring approaching, it’s time to check your home and see if the wintery cold caused any damage to your home or building. Signs of winter damage start to show themselves once the weather warms up and the surrounding environment starts to thaw. This article will help you get out of winter hibernation and back into barbeque season! Here is a quick maintenance checklist focusing on the exterior of your building.

1. Start at the Top (Inspect the Roof)

A healthy roof is one of the most important parts of your home. Ensuring it is sturdy and sealed is central to keeping your entire home efficient. Damage to your shingles, flashing, or any leaks can quickly trickle down and affect other areas of your home. When looking at your shingles look for curled edges, tears, or loose stones in your gutters, these are all signs of damage and could be a signal for replacement.

2. Check the Structure (Inspect the Foundation, Walls, Windows, and Doors)

Do a walk around of your home and check for cracks/holes in the foundation. as well as inspecting the exterior walls, siding, windows, and door. If you identify a foundation issue, contact a specialist to take a look. When inspecting the windows and doors, pay special attention to the caulking and weather stripping, issues in the seal are often harder to find than obvious holes or tears.

3. Independent Structures (Garages, Sheds, Fences, etc)

Make sure the garage door is functioning properly and has a strong seal at the bottom. Sweep and vacuum dust, dirt, and debris around the doors. Also, make sure there is nothing that could fall off the ceiling and impede the doors from working properly. Look for signs of cracked or split fencing boards, especially near any gates, and ice can raise fence boards and make gates stick.

4. Spring Yard Cleanup

It is almost grass-cutting season! Before you get ready to use that lawnmower, make sure to change the oil, and get the blade sharpened. Now, head to your local hardware store to restock on supplies such as landscaping bags and grass seed. Don’t forget to pick up the tools you need to thatch, weed, and clean out your garden beds. Now that you are ready, fire up the BBQ, pull out the cooler and invite the family and friends.

SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Counties is always here to help.

Spring Weather Brings a Variety of Hazards and Storms

3/22/2022 (Permalink)

The United States is a big territory, and having such a big space under one umbrella means that the spring season looks different depending on where you go. We are second in size only to Russia and Canada, although China is larger if you don’t count all the United States outlying territories.

Our vast space means that no two weather patterns will be the same. As spring nears and cold air begins to collide with warm air, let’s take a look at what different geographical regions can expect, and specifically, what we can expect here in Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick County.

The Upper Midwest and Northeast regions don’t always get to experience a warmup in the spring. This area stays colder than any other throughout the season as winter often doesn’t lose its grip until early summer. Residents from Maine to the Dakotas can expect extreme cold and the possibility of snowstorms and blizzards.

Those in the Pacific Northwest region are prone to heavy rain over the spring months, which can cause flooding and water damage issues. Higher elevations often are still dealing with snow like their northeast neighbors, and the melting and runoff from that can cause even more problems for residents in this area.

The flip side of these two areas, the southern West Coast, has to prepare for extreme heat that can create a dangerous situation for safety and quality of life. There is also the threat of tsunamis in areas of the South Pacific, including Hawaii, caused by shifts in the tectonic plates.

Here in the Southeast, we can expect severe storms and tornadoes as our weather experiences extreme shifts in temperature. Coastal states near us also have to contend with rip currents and early season hurricanes as spring takes hold.

The true tornado alley, the middle region of the country likely understands the risk of tornadoes better than we do. From Iowa to down to Texas contends with windstorms, derechos and fire risks made especially dangerous by dry conditions and swinging temperatures.

No matter where you live, you will experience some form of extreme weather as we move out of winter and towards summer. We know well here in South Carolina that staying prepared pays, no matter what spring may bring.

Grease Fires

3/21/2022 (Permalink)

Grease fires are the most dangerous when it comes to cooking fires and are responsible for 1 in every 5 home fire deaths. Below are some tips on how to put out grease fires. These tips could help save your or a loved one's life.

Putting Out a Grease Fire

  • Turn off source of heat
  • Do NOT pour water on it. Water and oil do not mix and when you add water it will sink right to the bottom and evaporate instantly, spreading flaming oil everywhere.
  • Attempt to remove all oxygen from the flame. Cover with another pot or baking pan.
  • If you cannot cover it, dump lots of baking soda on it.

If you do experience fire damage from a grease fire in your home, the team at SERVPRO are fire restoration specialists. Call us today at 864-229-6610

Potential Water Damage in Your Commercial Facility

3/21/2022 (Permalink)

There’s never a convenient time for water damage to strike your business, but unexpected water damage can come from multiple sources found in your commercial facility.

  • Water Supply - These water supply line systems are essential for nearly every business, but a broken pipe in one of them might create a complete disaster. The best way to deal with these issues is to shut off your water if possible. In fact, stopping the flow should be your first step in almost any flooding situation, as long as entering the flood area does not provide an immediate threat to your health.
  • Fire Sprinklers - Sprinkler systems are designed to protect you from disasters, but they can cause disasters as well. Prevent unfortunate losses by keeping your fire sprinklers maintained professionally.
  • Toilets - Nobody wants to think about a toilet overflowing, but this is one of the most common water-related disasters in businesses. Well-maintained bathroom facilities have less chance of causing a catastrophe, but it's important to know how to shut off your fixtures just in case. Some commercial toilet shutoff processes are far from intuitive.
  • Ruptured Pipes - A broken pipe might happen as a result of extreme temperature changes, direct stress or simple disrepair. If it happens out of sight, you might not notice the problem until it's advanced far enough to have caused significant damage. If you find a pipe issue, it's usually a good idea to call a restoration company and your insurance provider immediately after you stop the flow of water.

SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Counties has the training, experience, and equipment to handle large commercial water damage emergencies. Whether your water emergency occurs in a small office building or big box store, we will respond quickly to mitigate the damage and manage the restoration project through to its completion. Prevent Oven Fires

3/21/2022 (Permalink)

Accidents in the kitchen can happen but they can be prevented. Keep the heart of your kitchen happy and healthy with these oven maintenance tips.

How to prevent oven fires:

  • Make sure your oven is clean before each use.
  • Do not leave cooking food unattended.
  • When making cakes, cookies, or pastries, put a slightly larger baking tray underneath your baking pan to prevent batter dripping onto the bottom of the oven.
  • Cover any food that might splatter.
  • When roasting meat, drain some of the hot grease by removing pan from the oven every 30 minutes.
  • Get your oven checked out by a professional to make sure it is working correctly if there are any noticeable issues while using the oven.

If your oven does catch fire, it’s crucial to contain the smoke and flames. By leaving the oven door closed and turning off the oven, you are starving the fire, increasing the chances of safely containing a fire. Opening the oven door will only cause the fire to expand and cause more damage.

If you happen to suffer from a kitchen fire, SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Counties  is “Here to help” when disaster strikes.

The technicians at SERVPRO are all IICRC certified. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) sets high-quality standards for restoration companies. Employees at SERVPRO are constantly learning new techniques through e-Classes and certification training.

Advanced Technology

Storm damage restoration is a complex process and requires advanced technology. Choosing a restoration company with the proper tools is crucial to minimizing damage. SERVPRO only uses the best technology and equipment, including water removal machines, moisture exposing tools, and deodorization materials. They have access to equipment housed in over 1,700 franchises and even have designated disaster recovery teams.

Locally Owned and Operated

Locally owned companies are more invested in ensuring communities bounce back after major storms. Their clients aren’t just clients—they’re neighbors, friends, and family. SERVPRO is a nationwide franchise, but each franchise is locally owned. This combination gives home and business owners the best of both worlds: the customer care and localized knowledge that comes with a local company and a large corporation's resources.

Familiar with Insurance Requirements

Storm damage restoration can be stressful. However, dealing with insurance providers afterward can be even worse. The best storm restoration companies are familiar with all major insurance providers and provide assistance with the claims process.

Being Prepared

3/17/2022 (Permalink)

Having been a Commercial Property Manager in the past, I understand all too well the challenges that face those underappreciated individuals.  Good Commercial Property Managers are like mayors of small cities; constantly balancing the needs of the many for the good of all.  And they have to know a lot about a lot of different things; a “jack of all trades” so to speak.  But most of all they must plan and prepare for the improbable and the unexpected.

I learned that lesson the hard way when I was a relatively new property manager of a mixed used shopping center.  I had been working at the property for about 6 months and encouraged the head of maintenance to take a much-needed vacation.  I think most of all it was my youth that made me certain I could handle anything.  How little I knew.  So, the head of maintenance grinned and went fishing.  Which is why he was unreachable in the middle of a lake in his bass boat while back at the shopping center, the fire alarm was screaming, 5 fire trucks had arrived, and the sprinkler system was running full force. The Fire Chief then asked me the magic question, “Where are the risers for the sprinkler system?” And for those of you who don’t know but have probably guessed, that’s where you turn off the water to a sprinkler system after the fire is out.  Do you have ANY idea how much water those systems can pump out in a minute?

Well, SERVPRO does!  So, if you’re a Commercial Property Manager and find yourself with a bunch of water where you don’t want water to be, call SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Counties and we’ll make it “Like it never even happened.”

What to Do When Unexpected Storm Damage Comes Your Way

3/16/2022 (Permalink)

“Do you have storm damage to your home?

Technology has come such a long way in recent decades, but nothing is perfect. Raging storms will take you by surprise more often than you would like to admit. Regardless of the notice you may or may not receive, the real question is how prepared you are.

Are You Ready for The Unexpected?

Are your outside structures sound? Is your lawn furniture secure? Is your home surrounded by mature trees? These things and more play an essential part in how significant your damage could be. High wind speeds can send a tree or large tree limb crashing down, taking your car, roof, or the walls of your home with it. Not only does this cause tremendous structural damage, but the gaping hole allows rainwater to freely flow into your home. All of this can happen in a split second, causing irreparable damage to floors, walls, furniture, and family treasures.

You never know if or when this will happen to you, so it is best to have a plan. There is not much you can do physically to prevent further damage when there is a huge tree in your hallway. However, there are things you can take to lessen the likelihood of damage. Here are a few steps that will better ensure your safety and facilitate a quick restoration process.

Maintain Your Surroundings

Clear any surrounding trees or large items that can potentially damage your home or vehicle. Trees should generally be 10 to 20 feet from your house, but this may change depending on the tree type and size. Secure any loose items that could blow into your home. This includes lawn furniture, grills, yard tools, and toys.

Evacuate Once Damage Has Occurred

Should storm damage occur to your home, get yourself and your family out of the house immediately. It is possible for a storm to cause downed power lines, gas leaks, or an instable home foundation. It is imperative to wait for the home to be inspected for safety hazards prior to reentering your home.

Taking the Next Steps

Once you are safe, survey the damage and take pictures. Document everything for insurance purposes. Make sure you notify emergency services, if needed. Then call your insurance representative. Your insurance company will walk you through your coverage plan and discuss options. Lastly, don’t forget to contact SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick for your water damage and fire restoration needs. Our technicians will schedule a time to arrive onsite and identify how much damage has been caused and create a restoration plan. We will also work directly with your insurance company so you can focus on other matters.

Do not attempt to tarp the roof, replace windows, or clean water near the affected site by yourself. Repairing something yourself could unintentionally cause further damage to the home, or injuries to yourself.

If your home sustains water or fire damage due to a storm, you can count on us to help. We are available 24/7 to assist your family in your time of need. Call SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Co. at 864-229-6610 for all your storm restoration needs.

Why Charging Your Phone on Your Bed is a Fire Risk!

3/16/2022 (Permalink)

Charging cables sometimes cannot handle the current flowing through them, so it has to let off heat and damage the wire. When you have your bed and pillow trapping the heat, allowing it to build up, it gives the energy necessary to ignite combustible material. Fire risks from wires are common for households since 53% of teenagers charge their phones on their bed or under their pillow, and electrical failures cause 13% of home fires

Causes for phone charger fires

Bad cables

Wire tears

  • There are two main ways of how a charger could start a fire with torn wires. One way is when some of the internal strands of wires are disconnected. The wire then relies on a smaller number of copper strands to pass the current through the full wire, putting more strain on the strands, deteriorating them further, and causing a need for heat to dissipate the overflow of energy. As this heat builds up, it can be trapped by the bed and the pillow, igniting combustible cotton. Another way the wire tear can catch fire is if the wires are close enough but torn, they can create a free spark as a short circuit and ignite any combustible cotton in its path.

Kinks and tangles

  • Kinks and tangles can make it harder for the direct current to flow through, creating heat dissipation and further deteriorating the wires. Most kinks and tangles do not cause enough heat to ignite the cotton. However, it adds to the heat when it occurs alongside other electrical malfunctions.

Poor current rating

  • There can be too much current flowing through a wire. Having a current exchange mitch match happens when you put a heavy-duty charging brick with a low-quality wire or vice versa. It also happens with extremely long wires, where the gauge of the wire cannot handle the current flowing through, or the wire is simply too thin, and the electricity is too much for it.

Bad charging brick

A charging brick can have multiple reasons for causing a fire. Some of the main reasons are a bad resistor or a bad capacitor inside of the charging brick. If a resistor is bad, it cannot properly reduce the voltage, so the wires will take on more current than they can handle.

Capacitors are like little batteries inside of the charging brick. They are used to store energy and release that energy at a steady current so the rest of the components and your phone can handle the currents. Capacitors are only rated to handle a certain voltage. It is similar to if there is too much pressure in a water balloon, it will pop. When there is too much voltage, this can release energy abruptly, break other internal parts, create a short circuit, and create a loose spark.

Combustible materials

Being near a bed and curtains can give ample fuel for a spark to cause a flame. The heat and material used can affect the likelihood or danger of a flame. Insulating a wire with a heat-trapping material like a pillow lowers the energy needed to start a flame by a wire.

Phone malfunctions

Phone batteries can cause a fire, especially when overheated or damaged. If the material that separates the chemicals in the battery is broken down, damaged from a drop, or deteriorated over time, then the chemicals that are used to slowly produce power will come in contact and have a harsh reaction. This process can be accelerated by the phone being too hot, like when you see a phone explode from a microwave. It can also be accelerated from critical damage to the battery, damaging its critical safety components.

Electrical Fires

3/10/2022 (Permalink)

Most electrical fires are caused by faulty electrical outlets and or old, outdated appliances. The following are the most common reasons why electrical fires happen:

  1. Old electrical sockets and unsafe appliances

Appliances that are old and overused and those that fall short of modern safety standards are the worst culprits. Frayed electrical cords, self-jointed wires, and worn-out sockets that are not properly grounded are major causes of fires. They become ready outlets for directing heat and fire to carpets, rugs, curtains and combustible plastic. Older appliances draw more power than the wall sockets can handle.

  1. Using light fixtures that exceed the permissible wattage

A very common cause of fires is plugging lights, lighting appliances and bulbs into electrical sockets that cannot handle higher wattage levels. Antique lighting appliances may have defective wiring that makes the appliance unstable by overheating. Decorating lights with colored paper and cloth shades can increase the risk of fire when the material or fabric heats up.

  1. Using multiple appliances plugged into an extension cord

Unrestricted use of extension cords is a major fire hazard. The risk of fire increases when your TV, home theatre, computer and other appliances are all plugged into a single extension cord. This creates excessive power load on a single socket which may not be designed to handle that load.  So, there is a social and economic cost to damaged wiring!

  1. Locating portable heaters near combustible materials

Portable space heaters that use coils are potentially dangerous when they are positioned carelessly near curtains and rugs and adjacent to beds and cloth covered furniture. The chances of inflammable material coming into contact with the red-hot coils increase the risk of fire.

  1. Wiring that becomes defective with the passage of time

Over a period of time, you add more electrical appliances such as wide screen televisions, home theatre, microwave oven, refrigerator and air conditioners. The outdated home wiring cannot handle the increased power load. Older wiring tends to heat up quickly and catches fire. If the breaker boxes are themselves defective, they cannot prevent overheated electrical panels from catching fire.

Prevent House Fires: Do's and Don'ts of Grilling this Spring

3/10/2022 (Permalink)

Homeowners in the Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick love to grill, but there are many dangers that come with all the outdoor fun.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fire departments went to an annual average of 8,900 home fires involving grills, hibachis or barbecues per year.

Here are a few ways to stay safe and prevent house fires while grilling:

Do -

1. Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your house. Farther is even better. This includes portions attached to your house like carports, garages and porches. Grills should not be used underneath wooden overhangs either, as the fire could flare up into the structure above. This applies to both charcoal and gas grills.

2. Clean your grill regularly. If you allow grease and fat to build up on your grill, they provide more fuel for a fire. Grease is a major source of flare ups.

3. Check for gas leaks. You can make sure no gas is leaking from your gas grill by making a solution of half liquid dish soap and half water and rubbing it on the hoses and connections. Then, turn the gas on (with the grill lid open.) If the soap forms large bubbles, that's a sign that the hoses have tiny holes or that the connections are not tight enough.

4. Keep decorations away from your grill. Decorations like hanging baskets, pillows and umbrellas look pretty AND provide fuel for a fire. To make matters worse, today's decor is mostly made of artificial fibers that burn fast and hot, making this tip even more important.

5. Keep a spray bottle of water handy. That way, if you have a minor flare-up, you can spray it with the water to instantly calm it. The bonus of this tip is that water won't harm your food, so dinner won't be ruined!

6. Keep a fire extinguisher within a couple steps of your grill. And KNOW HOW TO USE IT. If you are unsure how to use the extinguisher, don't waste time fiddling with it before calling 911. Firefighters say many fire deaths occur when people try to fight a fire themselves instead of calling for expert help and letting the fire department do its job.

Don't -

7. Turn on the gas while your grill lid is closed. NEVER do this. It causes gas to build up inside your grill, and when you do light it and open it, a fireball can explode in your face.

8. Leave a grill unattended. Fires double in size every minute. Plan ahead so that all of your other food prep chores are done and you can focus on grilling.

9. Overload your grill with food. This applies especially fatty meats. The basic reason for this tip is that if too much fat drips on the flames at once, it can cause a large flare-up that could light nearby things on fire.

10. Use a grill indoors. People often think it will be safe to use a grill, especially a small one, indoors. NOT TRUE. In addition to the fire hazard, grills release carbon monoxide, the deadly colorless, odorless gas. That gas needs to vent in fresh air, or it can kill you, your family and pets.

In case you experience a house fire, call your local fire department immediately. Be sure to contact a licensed fire damage restoration company SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Counties to cleanup and repair any damage to your home occurs. 864-229-6610

How To Protect Your Home Against Rainwater

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

Routine maintenance and repair work can help to extend the life of your roof and protect against damages from heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Waterproof the Exterior Of Your House

At SERVPRO® of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick County, we understand that the aftermath of water damage is one of the most stressful things that a homeowner can experience. It can be a very big and expensive problem if not treated properly and in a timely fashion. The best way to deal with water damage is to stop it before it starts. The exterior of your house is the first line of defense against water damage.

Maintain Your Roof

The roof’s primary purpose is to keep water out of your shelter. Not making sure your roof is taken care of can lead to a host of problems- the worst being extensive water damage that could permanently damage the structure of your home.  Most roofs have a 20–30-year lifespan, however climate, weather conditions and even trees could cause damage to your shingles and create a leak. It’s best to periodically inspect your roof for damaged or missing shingles. Replacing compromised shingles is a quick and inexpensive fix that can extend the shelf life of your roof.

Add Sealant to Your Windows and Doors

Entryways to your house are common sites that promote water damage and leakage into the home. Water can seep through the cracks around your windows and doors if they aren’t properly secured. Instead of waiting on the leak to happen, go ahead and make sure these areas are weather-stripped and have fresh sealing. You can easily repair large cracks with insulating foam sealant or dd some caulking where the window meets the siding.

Make Sure Your Home’s Exterior Is Protected

If you’re spotting some signs of water damage on your interior walls but aren’t seeing a source of leakage, it’s highly likely that water is entering through holes in your exterior walls. If your siding or exterior paint aren’t well managed water could seep through inside your home. Common sidings such as stucco, aluminum siding or wood siding has to be painted in order to protect the home against water properly. Paint is more than a pretty feature; it seals your siding and protects your home from weather related issues.

Making sure your gutters are properly functioning and aren’t clogged is also a huge part of protecting your home from water damage. If your gutters are full of leaves, sticks and pine needles or not angled correctly, water will be redirected down the side of your house and collect at the base of your home. Start by clearing out all the junk in your gutters and ensuring that they are not damaged.

Correctly functioning gutters should send water through the downspout, which shoots water away from your home. When checking gutters make sure that your downspout extends far enough at the bottom to redirect the water drainage to a safe distance away from the base of your home.

Pro Tip: Downspouts should direct water at least three feet from the exterior walls of your home.

Space heater warming an office space.

We all have that one co-worker who is always cold and must have the need to additional heat in their office space. Space heaters can keep you cozy during these cold days of winter, but they can also become a major hazard if used incorrectly. Space heaters cause about one-third of all winter fires Mostly caused by a space heater being too close to curtains or upholstered furniture. This doesn’t include the people who end up in emergency rooms from encountering space heaters.

Follow these Space Heater Safety tips to help keep you and your coworkers safe this winter season.

  • Review all instructions and warning labels prior to setting up your space heater
  • Heater should be placed on a hard low surface and out of high traffic areas in your home
  • Heaters should be at least 3 feet away from any flammable items or furniture
  • Purchase heaters with an automatic shutoff and tip over feature
  • Never plug a space heater into an extension cord or power strip
  • Avoid leaving spice heaters unattended and unplug when you leave for the day.

A space heater can be a create a warm comfortable space for those co-workers who are “always” cold but always remember safety first!

Winter Travel

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Winter Travel

We have all experienced not one but two winter storm events over the past 10 days making us realize that winter is officially here to stay for at least the next couple of months. Hopefully you were prepared at home and if you had to travel during these events. If not, you still have time because winter is far from over. We take the necessary precautions when it comes to our home but what about your vehicle?  Not all of us have the luxury of staying home when the winter weather hits so make sure your vehicle is equipped to handle driving in winter storm events.  Make sure your tires are properly inflated and have enough tread to be able to maneuver through snowy and slushy roads. Check your tires often during colder weather. Keep at least a half a tank of fuel in your vehicle during the winter months – being stranded on the highway is bad enough - but running out of gas can be a nightmare in itself!  Keep blankets – snacks, water, and a cell phone charger in your car prior to a winter event. The weather can change quickly – stay informed with local weather alerts and your local Department of Transportation. If you don’t have to travel, then stay home and enjoy the winter wonderland with your family.

How to Use Technology During a Storm

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Technology can cause stress and sometimes is more of a burden than helpful. However, in the case of emergencies such as natural disasters, it can be extremely helpful for keeping you updated and letting friends and family know where you are. You more than likely already have the technology in your home to keep you and your family safe during a disaster, so follow these tips to use it effectively!

Remember, always be sure to keep portable charges ready in your emergency kit so you can always access your technology when you need it most.

Social Media for News

Using social media is a great way to get up-to-date news straight to your smartphone. Almost all local and national government has social media pages that are updated regularly, especially during a natural disaster.

Mark Yourself Safe

Another way to use social media is to mark yourself safe. Facebook offers a feature called Safety Check that allows you to mark yourself safe if you are in the area of a dangerous situation. Marking yourself safe lets friends and family know that although you are in the area of disaster, you are safe. The Red Cross offers a similar feature called Safe & Well which is both an app and website where you can mark yourself as safe for friends and family.

Use Online Storage

Services like Google Drive and DropBox are a great way to store personal information online in a safe manner. Keeping copies of identification cards, passports, insurance policies, medical records, and pet information is important if your documents get lost in a disaster or you forget them when you are evacuating. You can also access DropBox and Google drive on any computer or phone, just make sure you remember your password!

Ways To Prepare Your Business for a Storm

6/1/2021 (Permalink)

Tips You Can Follow to Prepare Your Business for A Storm

Though storms are fairly common occurrences, businesses in Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Counties, are often not prepared for damage that a rain storm can cause. As a business owner, there are tips you can follow to prepare your business for a storm.

1. Maintain Your Business's Landscape

Though you may not think about your business's landscape when it comes to preparing for a storm, your landscape can have a major impact on your business. Debris and fallen limbs commonly cause damage to businesses during storms with high winds, so it can be wise to clear away any fallen limbs and to trim limbs that hang over your business. Additionally, making sure that your drainage spouts are clear can help to prevent flood damage to your property.

2. Consider Investing in Helpful Tools and Materials

As you are getting your property ready for a rain storm, it can be wise to consider investing in tools and materials that can prevent damage. Installing a lightning rod can help to divert lightning from your business if a strike does occur. If your area commonly experiences storms with strong gusts of wind, installing storm shutters can also help to protect your business from damage.

3. Make Sure Staff Knows What To Do During a Storm

When preparing for a thunderstorm, it's often wise to include your staff in the process. It can be helpful to regularly talk with your staff about storm protocol and procedures. Having a protocol in place can make it easier for your staff to quickly prepare for an approaching storm. When creating a plan, it can be useful to think of everything from damage prevention to safety measurements. At this time, you may also consider getting contact information for an emergency restoration service to ensure you can easily contact professionals if damage does occur.

A rain storm can cause major damage to a business, but being prepared for the worst can often help to prevent damage. You can make sure your business is ready for a storm by maintaining your property's landscape, investing in useful tools and materials and discussing storm procedures with your staff.

SERVPRO Mold

Mold Growth

Dealing with mold is not an easy task. Especially for a homeowner that has never dealt with mold before. If you have noticed water damage do not wait until it is too late. Water damage can lead to mold growth, and if you leave your home untreated your insurance can decline your claim due to long term mold.

Follow these steps for Mold Remediation:

Step 1: It is important to first find the cause of the mold and fix any leaks that could have caused fungus to grow.

Step 2: Set up containment in order to close the area that will be worked on from the rest of the space.

Step 3: Demo out any drywall that has mold on it or is directly in front of the framing that has mold.

Step 4: Wipe down the affected area with anti-microbial wipes. Wiping the area down can collect a lot of the mold spores and get it prepared for the grinding. Wiping down also reduces the number of mold spores that become airborne during the grinding step.

Step 5: Dry out the affected area. This is the most important step by far! If the affected area still contains moisture, mold can grow back.

Step 6: Grind down the affected materials in order to best reduce the number of mold spores on the material.

Step 7: HEPA vacuum any debris that had been caused during the mold remediation. Final wipe down of the affected materials and containment to ensure that the chamber is ready for a post mold clearance test if requested by the homeowner.

If you discover mold in your home or business, contact SERVPRO of Greenwood to correctly remediate and remove mold. Contact us at 864-229-6610.

SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Co. has encountered damage within the last few months that occurred while the tenant or homeowner was out of town on vacation.

To enjoy a stress-free, fun vacation we advise that you take a few precautions before leaving your home.

The Difference Between Restore and Replace.

5/20/2021 (Permalink)

Restore vs. Replace

At SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Counties our goal is to minimize the disruption to tenants, owners, and property managers after a fire or water damage.

The cost of replacement after a loss is higher than the cost of restoration. We will work hard to get your property to its preloss condition and make it “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO of Greenwood County is always here to help and we want you to ALWAYS be prepared. Here are some tips from FEMA(Federal Emergency Management Agency) for preparing your home or business for a flood.

During the Flood:

  • Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if instructed to do so.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances .
  • Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.

Corporate Paying a Visit?

3/20/2021 (Permalink)

Recently SERVPRO of Greenwood received a call from a big commercial warehouse here in Greenwood asking if we could go in and do some general cleaning for them because corporate was going to be there that week. Then we used our specialized solutions to wipe the walls and rails down until they were nice and clean. We started at the very top of the wall by climbing up the tallest ladder we had in our shop and worked our way down. Getting all the spots off the walls was not easy, our cleaning were putting in some elbow grease to ensure clean and shiny walls. After all the walls around the warehouse was cleaned, we moved to clean the tile floors and windows around the office space. Rainy Days Carpet Pains

3/19/2021 (Permalink)

April Showers are coming, and we know what that means…. muddy yards! If you have little ones or pets you know all too well the fear that comes from the sight or puddles forming in your yard. The carpet and flooring that you’ve spent your quarantine time deep cleaning, is now lacking its luster.

Fear not! We’ve put together a simple solution for removing those pesky mud stains, and it’s much simpler than you’d think! Don’t run to the store for a specialty product or “miracle” stain remover, everything you need is probably already in your cabinets.

You’re probably tempted to start cleaning that mud the moment you spot it, but, practice some patience and allow the spot to dry completely before you touch it. After it has dried, you’ll want to vacuum the area to remove all loose dirt. Next, you’ll want to spray the spot with a mixture of 50% water and 50% white vinegar (keep this handy as it’s a wonderful all-purpose cleaner). Using a white cloth or towel begin to blot up the 50/50 mixture you’ve sprayed on. Continue until all signs of the stain have disappeared.

We don’t recommend following the instructions given by popular blogs and DIY sources that suggest the use of mild dish soap or detergent. While they do clean effectively, if they are not thoroughly rinsed afterwards, a sticky residue is left behind. This residue may be difficult to feel, and attracts dirt particles like a magnet. The clean spot you once had will be quickly discolored.

Separating Contents

3/19/2021 (Permalink)

In this scenario at a home in Greenwood, SC, the customer suffered major damage in their kitchen when their stove caught on fire. The rest of the home suffered smoke and soot damage, and all of the contents within were affected. SERVPRO of Greenwood's production crew went out right away to assess the damage and come up with a game plan that best suited the customer’s needs and availability. If you or your business has experienced a fire, then you know how much work it can be to not only get your space back to the way it was pre fire, but to get the smoke smell out of all of your belongings. Very often, SERVPRO of Greenwood encounters fire restoration jobs that include the cleaning of contents. It can be extremely difficult to trust a business with all of your belongings, which is why SERVPRO Greenwood has a production crew that goes over every detail with our customers. Production will come out to your home and pack up all of your affected belongings while documenting very carefully with photos and inventory sheets. It is a very careful process to ensure all belongings are accounted for and in the assigned box from your home, to the warehouse, back to you.

At SERVPRO of Greenwood, we understand that some of your belongings are more essential to everyday life than others, so first we make sure to see what belongings take priority and get those cleaned of soot first thing. Once these contents are cleaned, we set up a time for pick up or delivery, whatever is most convenient to the customer. Contents that take less priority are cleaned over the following weeks, while restoration on the structure is completed. Once your home is ready to be lived in again production arranges delivery of all the cleaned contents. Content cleaning is a very extensive job that can sometimes take weeks to finish, but if the contents are complete before your home restoration is complete, SERVPRO of Greenwood will store them until your home is move in ready. If you experience a fire and need the smoke and soot cleaned from your belongings, give us a call at 864-229-6610!

How to prepare for a Storm

3/19/2021 (Permalink)

Here in the Upstate we can count on having unpredictable weather, from a warm sunny day in December to tornadoes in March. But when disaster strikes SERVPRO is here for you! We are only a phone call away to help you pick up the pieces, however, you might want to know how to prepare for the worst while you hope for the best. We can help with that, too!

  • Make sure your gutters are cleaned out. Gutters full of leaves and debris can contribute to water leaking into your home or business.
  • Inspect your roof; checking for loose or missing shingles can also prevent moisture from getting into your property.
  • Check the trees near your home or business to ensure none are too weak to stand up to storm winds and therefore will not fall onto and structures.
  • Be prepared in case of loss of power
    • Get a generator to maintain power to your major appliances or for your furnace
    • Place a thermometer in your refrigerator and freezer, perishable foods need to maintain a temperature below 40 degree.

We hope this guide will serve you well, but SERVPRO will have a team standing by 24/7 for any cleaning or restoration needs! Call us at 864-229-6610!

After the Storm

3/19/2021 (Permalink)

We're all prepared and ready for when a storm comes. But what about after the storm? Do you have a checklist of what to look for? Storms and the after effects they leave behind can be stressful. Don't get overwhelmed.

Once you know it's safe to enter your home begin taking pictures of the after damage, before you move anything.

Before you enter the home step back and try to see as much of the roof as possible. Are there missing shingles? Are there any visible holes? Before you enter the home make sure all doorways are clear and secure.

Once inside your home check to make sure that there are no cracks or visible leaks.

Once you have done your own initial walk through call us. The faster the call comes in the faster we can remove any water and begin the restoration process.

Never try to do the clean up alone. Water damage can look dry but damage can be below the surface.

3/18/2021 (Permalink)

First impressions are crucial, I think we can all agree, especially when it comes to your business! If a new customer walks in your store or office, what are the first things they notice? Cleanliness? Smell? Visible dirt? All these things might deter a customer from returning or even making an initial purchase, not something you’d want as a business owner.

You can certainly dust, mop or light a candle on your own – but deep cleaning requires a little more effort & know-how. Did you know that SERVPRO of Greenwood offers deep cleaning services? We can clean and sanitize your floors (carpet & hard flooring), clean your duct work – which can help to eliminate odors and provide a cleaner breathing environment.

Fire Cleanup Process

3/18/2021 (Permalink)

Fire restoration is one of, if not the most, intricate forms of remediation we offer. There are several stages to ensure the structure is truly left “Like it never even happened.” We do our best to explain these steps to our customers from the moment we set foot on their property. Because there are so many stages in restoring a fire damaged property, these types of jobs take a significant amount of time. We work with insurance adjusters to ensure that every item that is deemed unsalvageable will be replaced for the property owner. The items that can be salvaged will be cleaned onsite, or in our warehouses using specially formulated products that gently remove soot and smoke residue.

While cleaning, we’re also removing the affected structural materials. That includes drywall, insulation, flooring, and any other burned items. What remains will also be cleaned with our SERVPRO products and equipment designed to remove smoke particles. Once cleaned, our reconstruction division begins working their magic – we rebuild, replace and restore the property to its pre-fire glory!

With Hurricane Season Approaching in a Couple of Months it's Better to be Prepared

3/17/2021 (Permalink)

Studying Hurricane Categories for Disaster Restoration Response

When a community is impacted by a hurricane, SERVPRO is quick to respond.  Our company has access to over 1,700 franchises nationwide, and our storm response teams have decades of experience.

Hurricane Categories

Category 1 Hurricane

Dangerous winds are associated with Cat 1 hurricanes.  During these storms, we expect to see damage to a home’s roof, gutters, and vinyl siding.  We also expect to see some tree damage, especially branches falling atop of unshielded vehicles or falling onto homes.  In this case, our franchise prepares expects to see some water damage and a large need for roof tarping.

Category 2 Hurricane

The winds in a Cat 2 hurricane are around 100 mph and will cause more damage than a Category 1 Hurricane. Even well-constructed homes have a large possibility of getting major damage to its roof and siding.  We also expect to see trees uprooted and block roadways. Power outages are also extremely common. In this scenario, our franchise will take a large load of roof tarping materials and power tools to assist with debris removal for roadways that are blocked on the ways to homes in need.  We also expect the need for our own power generators.

Category 3 Hurricane

A category 3 hurricane is considered to be a major hurricane.  In a Cat 3 hurricane scenario, we expect to see major damage or even the removal of the roof decking.  We also expect to see trees and branches uprooted and either block roadways or damage homes themselves as they fall.  Electricity and water outage will likely be a factor. In this case, our franchise responds similarly as we do to Cat 2 hurricanes, which is by taking roof tarping materials, power tools to clear debris, and carrying our own generators.  Due to the amount of fallen water associated with this category of hurricane, we also expect to not have immediate access to flooded areas of the community. If this is the case, we will wait for approval from first responders before proceeding.

Category 4 Hurricane

In a Cat 4 hurricane, we expect to see homes lose some or all of their roof and have damage to their exterior walls.  Many trees, even those deeply rooted, will be snapped and often fall onto homes, vehicles, and block roadways. It’s not uncommon to see many homes cut off from emergency services due to debris.  With the loss of electrical power and water plus the flooding and blocked roadways, the areas impacted with a category 4 hurricane may not be accessed for days or even weeks. In this scenarios, our crews are first helping the outer areas and assisting homes that are accessible as we wait for first responders to reach these areas and deem them accessible.  Due to the time it takes the water to recede, our franchise expects major damage to homes and businesses. Flooring and a major portion of the walls in these properties will need demolition. Sanitation will be a major concern, and mold growth may already be present. Roof tarping and board up services will almost always be necessary to secure the property.

Category 5 Hurricane

In a Cat 5 hurricane situation, we expect to see many homes and businesses experience a roof collapse and damage to the exterior walls. Sections of a community will be flooded and not be accessible for weeks. Uprooted trees will also damage properties and block roadways. Our response to this category of damage is the same as in a category 4 with our franchise understanding that it will take a longer time for the flood waters to recede and first responders to allow restoration service workers to enter.

Storm Surge Scales

Storm surge threat is not as easy to scale, as wind scales due to local conditions such as bathymetry.  For this reason, our franchise pays close attention to meteorological reports that focus on the depth of inundation expected at the impacted areas.  These storm surge warnings greatly help us know how to approach properties and prepare demolition, sanitation, and drying techniques. Depending on the time it takes for the waters to recede will also tell us how much, if any, of the contents inside a home or business will have a chance to be restored. This helps us know if debris removal will be necessary, and if mold remediation needs are likely.

Food and Lodging

When a storm is strong enough to call for evacuations, it’s often bewildering to see the green SERVPRO trucks head towards the storm when some are leaving.  Our franchise has studied the storm and is heading to the closest but still safe destination. Our choice of lodging is either a hotel or another SERVPRO franchise location that is safe from the storm.  Wherever we are able to stay, our crews will set up a command center, dispatch, and sleep. We will set up a command center as close as possible to the open impacted section and began to help homes in that area.  As first responders allowed more areas of the County to be opened, we would relocate closer to the city.

Home Fire Pit Tips

3/17/2021 (Permalink)

Here in Greenwood, SC it's a tradition to enjoy the cooler nights outside around a homemade fire pit! Many of us are looking forward to spending time gathering around them to enjoy time with family and friends. Before you start dreaming of moonlit nights and toasted marshmallows, take a moment to check out some of these tips to remember.

Backyard Fire Pit Safety Tips:

  • Whether you prefer a built-in or portable fire pit, choose one that is not too large for the area. The pit should be a minimum of 10 feet away from any structures or combustible materials as well as away from trees, fences, sheds, power lines, and telephone wires.
  • Make sure that the seating area is large enough and properly placed for comfort and ventilation.
  • Check wind direction before lighting a fire.
  • Don’t use flammable fluids (gasoline, lighter fluid, etc.) to light or relight fires.
  • To start the fire, use a lighter to ignite crumpled pieces of paper covered with small sticks. Then, add larger sticks and a log or two to keep it burning.
  • Burn only dry material. Damp material will create excess smoke.
  • Don’t wear flammable clothing (like nylon) or any loose-fitting clothing.
  • Never leave the fire unattended, and keep pets and children far away from the fire as they will be attracted to it.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher, garden hose, or bucket of water nearby.
  • As the fire dies down, use a shovel and spread out the ashes to allow them to cool down. Then slowly pour water over those ashes and watch them closely to be sure that no burning embers remain or reignite. Put the cooled ashes in a specially designated ash storage metal can.

Why It's Important To Test Your Smoke Detector

3/16/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke detectors save lives when property installed and maintained, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Test smoke alarms monthly using the test button. Smoke alarms with non-replaceable batteries need the entire smoke alarm unit replaced every ten years. If the alarm chirps signaling low battery, take the proper steps to replace the unit or the batteries immediately. Never disable or remove the battery from an alarm. Almost half of first where smoke alarms were present but did not activate had missing or disconnected batteries (NFPA).

In larger commercial facilities, hard wired or wireless smoke alarms offer benefits such as not needing to be tested as often and activating throughout the entire building if smoke is detected in just one area (NFPA).

If you need help installing, testing or changing batteries in your smoke alarms, contact your local fire department, an electrician or the American Red Cross.

Be sure your home or workplace has a fire emergency plan in place and conduct regular fire drills. For more information on Emergency Preparedness, contact SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Counties 864-229-6610

Spring Storm Prep

3/16/2021 (Permalink)

As Spring approaches its important to remember that a transition in seasons can bring unpredictable weather patterns. We typically see a fair amount of rain in SC, and this year should be no different. With rain and storms comes wind and water damage. We can’t control what happens outside of our homes, but there are steps we can take to prevent potential damage.

  • Clean up your yard - branches and limbs that hang over your home or other structures pose a hazard, remove dead or sickly trees that can easily fall during strong winds.
  • Free up drains – gutters, downspouts, French drains, etc. Anything that allows water to drain on your property, clean them out and ensure the area around them will allow for proper function.
  • Basements – many of us have them, especially our lake homes. Consider installing a sump pump, they even have models with alarms to alert you of unwanted moisture accumulating in your home.

If water damage does occur because of storms, be sure to call SERVPRO of Greenwood  to assist. We’ll help you make it “Like it never even happened.” 864-2229-6610

Never pour grease down your sink!

3/11/2021 (Permalink)

You’ve probably heard this before, but you should definitely avoid pouring grease down your kitchen sink. It doesn’t matter if you flush it with hot or cold water. It can still congeal and cling to your pipes, and could still cause some serious blockage and water damage.

Some people use detergent to break up grease before pouring it down the drain…and that may help sometimes. But there’s no guarantee that it’ll keep the grease from sticking to your pipes, so why take the risk?

The safest thing to do is just to pour your grease in an empty can, and either let it sit or put it in the refrigerator. Once it hardens you can toss it in the trash and get rid of it.

Pipe leaks from clogged pipes can cause water damage to your home as well as mold damage if the water damage is not soon addressed.

If you have a leaky pipe under your kitchen sink that has caused water damage to your home, please do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville, &McCormick Counties  today!

We are here for you 24/7 at 864-229-6610

Know about Fire Safety in your Home

3/11/2021 (Permalink)

  • Cooking is the #1 cause of house fires - Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave, even for a short time, turn off the stove.
  • Space heaters need their space - Keep fixed and portable space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that is flammable and never leave space heaters on while you are away from your home.
  • Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children.
  • Inspect electrical cords often – especially your smartphone cords – they tend to become frayed sooner than normal electrical cords. Replace any cords that have any visible damage or broken plugs.
  • Install smoke alarms and check the batteries monthly and replace them often – test your alarms often.
  • Have a fire escape plan and practice it often with your family.
  • Candles smell great but they are also a fire hazard – keep candles away from flammable items and never leave your home or go to bed with a candle burning.

Commercial Coverage

3/11/2021 (Permalink)

Most Commercial Insurance policies provide coverage for not only the building, but the building’s contents. In the event of fire, water, or mold damage, you certainly want to retain the monetary value in both the structure and the valuables you have inside!

Take time to review your policies, their limits, and any stipulations they may include. It’s also important to keep an accurate inventory on hand of anything of value within your business. The more information you can provide, the higher the chances of you recouping potential money lost.

As always, at SERVPRO we do our best to adhere to our “Repair vs. Replace” mentality. If we can fix, restore, or simply clean your items, rather than attempt to get them replaced, we will. This saves you money, keeping your insurance claim low, valuable time.

SERVPRO Home Cleaning Tips

3/11/2021 (Permalink)

Eco-Friendly, Non-Toxic, All-Natural, Bleach Free, Disinfecting – all of these are phrases you might see when you are shopping for cleaning products. But how do you know what is true or the “best” option? We’re not here to write reviews or provide a pros and cons list of the thousands of cleaning products currently on the market. But we do have a simple and cost-effective solution to help you in cleaning essentially every surface in your home! In fact, you probably already have it sitting on a shelf.

Distilled White Vinegar is one of the most versatile and cost-effective cleaning products you can find. While it does not contain a perfumy scent, it can easily cut through mildew, bacteria, and grime. It is safe for use on a wide variety of surfaces, and harm your children or pets. Not sold yet? We’ve listed a number of the ways you might use vinegar to clean your home!

Refrigerator: Spills or leaks inside your fridge? You don’t want chemicals where you store your food. Wipe up spills using a cloth dampened with equal parts vinegar and water.

Drains: Pour vinegar on a scrub brush small enough to get inside the disposal or drain grate. Sprinkle the brush with baking soda and scrub to remove built-up grime and odor causing bacteria.

Cutting Boards: spray the surface with 100% vinegar, then rinse to clean.

Microwave: remove those hard-to-clean microwave splatters by putting ½ cup vinegar and ½ cup water in a glass bowl. Microwave on high 2-3 minutes or until it begins to boil – wipe away buildup with ease!

Stained Plastic Containers: coat the container in vinegar, let it sit for a few minutes then wash as usual. If you find that you have tough tomato or high acidity food stains put 1 tsp of dish soap in the container, a folded paper towel and enough water to cover that paper towel. Place the lid back on the container and shake until the stains are gone!

Countertops: spray vinegar onto the surface and wipe it away with a warm, wet rag. However, you should avoid cleaning countertops with vinegar if you have granite or marble.

Toilet:  to clean a toilet with vinegar, pour about a cup of vinegar in the bowl and allow it to soak overnight. For tough jobs, empty the toilet water first. The next day, spread baking soda or borax in the bowl, scrub and flush!

Tub or sink drain: pour ½ cup distilled white vinegar around the closed drain and allow it to sit for several hours, penetrating any build up or soap scum. Scrub to remove, drain and rinse!

Shower:  Bring vinegar to a boil, then carefully use the warm vinegar to wipe down the shower door and walls. Keep them damp by wiping them down every couple of minutes for 30 minutes. Using a non-scratch sponge soaked in vinegar, sprinkle it with baking soda and scrub. Rinse with clean water to wash away soap scum, mold, water spots and germs!

Showerhead: Pour some white vinegar into a plastic bag, then using a rubber band or twist tie, secure it around the showerhead. The showerhead should be completely submerged in the vinegar. Leave the bag on overnight and remove before showering.

Tile: mix ½ cup white distilled vinegar with a gallon of warm water. Mop floors or scrub countertops with the solution and allow to air dry.

Mattress Disinfectant: mix distilled white, a little rubbing alcohol, and some tea tree oil in a spray bottle. Lightly spray on the mattress to help combat general odors, mildew and dust mites.

The list of uses for cleaning with Distilled Vinegar is virtually endless! Keep a bottle of 50/50 Vinegar and Water on hand for all of your quick clean-up needs.

Water Lines in the Winter

2/8/2021 (Permalink)

Correct way to leave your outside water lines in the winter - no hose attached!

We all experienced a splash of Spring here in the South over the past couple of days – maybe you cleaned up that dirty car you have been driving around.  Did you drain that hose? Our quick trip down Spring lane was short lived as our area is back in the freeze zone.  Make sure you are following proper protocol with your outside hoses – drain and disconnect to avoid the risk of your pipes freezing and bursting.  Even if you have a “frost-free” spigot, you still need to remove the hose. Winters in the South can fluctuate on any given day. If you feel the need to pressure wash your driveway in January when the temperatures are like Spring – do your thing – just remember to drain and disconnect those hoses before the cold spell sneaks up on you again. #SERPVROOFGREENWOODABBEVILLEMCCORMICKCO

Space Heaters

2/8/2021 (Permalink)

What happens when a Surge Protector overloads!

Here in the South, we experienced an unusually cold over the last month, and these cold temperatures will only get worse.  Our central heat can sometimes leave us cold, so we tend to break out the space heater for larger drafty areas in your home that are harder to keep warm. Whatever you do, do not plug these heaters into a power strip.  Power strips and extension cords are not designed to handle the high current flow needed for a space heater and can overheat or even catch fire. Purchase newer model space heaters as they have the most current safety features. Choose a heater that allows you to adjust the temperature to avoid overheating. Always place your heaters on a hard level surface that are not in close contact to drapes, furniture or in the line of pets or children.   Following these few simple steps can help make winter a little more bearable and safer or you and your family!

How to prepare for the Winter

2/8/2021 (Permalink)

If a tree falls during a winter storm causing a power outage. It could take the electric company hours to get out and repair the broken lines.

Winter is here and the cold temperatures throughout the South have been extremely cold and well below freezing for a few weeks – something most of us are not used too! We all prepare for the necessities like food and water – but being prepared for a power outage should be at the top of your list.

  • Have flashlights ready and accessible with batteries on hand.
  • Have a battery-operated radio so you can stay in tune with weather updates and alerts.
  • Have a good supply of firewood on hand if you have a wood burning fireplace.
  • Close off doors to bedrooms and rooms not in use and confine the family to one area of your home – make it fun like a sleepover with your friends when you were younger.
  • Keep a full propane tank on hand so you can cook on a gas grill and make sure you have a manual can opener – yes this will come in handy if you have no power.
  • Fill your car up with Gas – you may need your vehicle to charge your lifeline to the outside world.
  • Having a generator is a plus but remember to use “generator” safety.

Following a few preparedness tips can help you and your family stay safe and warm during a power outage.

Foundation and Water

6/1/2020 (Permalink)

We are over the winter slump – entering the season of rain and here lately in the South – A lot of rain! Heavy amounts of rain over a small period of time can cause flooding, septic and home foundation issues.  Water Damage is the number one culprit that weakens your home’s foundation which is the very core that keeps your house standing. Water damage that goes unattended can and will over time cause serious structural damage.  The best line of defense is to make sure your home has proper drainage to keep the water away from your home’s foundation.  Over time the soil around your foundation gets wet and dries out – this causes the soil to expand and contract. Soil changes can cause the foundation to crack, sag and weaken.  Check for moisture often, especially after extended periods of rain. If you see moisture damage to your foundation call a professional quickly to avoid further damages to your home.

Soot Cleanup

3/16/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  •   Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  •   Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  •   The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke-wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville, & McCormick will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage has occurred. The cleaning process will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet smoke- Plastic and Rubber

  •   Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke- Paper and Wood

  •   Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore the smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue-Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Few tips before filing a claim!

3/16/2020 (Permalink)

When a disaster hits your home, you usually panic and call your Agent or insurance company to file a claim. Sometimes that isn’t a good idea because your deductible maybe higher than the damage itself.  It is best to get an estimate from a restoration company like SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Counties before you call to file a claim.

Here are some basic rules to follow when filing a claim:

  • Check with your agent or assigned adjustor to verify you’re covered for the claim. After heavy rains and hurricanes, many homeowners think they have flood insurance. Traditional homeowners’ insurance does not cover water damage caused by floods. It is a separate coverage underwritten by the federal government through the National Flood Insurance Program. If you file a claim with your insurance company for something that isn’t covered, the claim itself doesn’t go away from your record.
  • If you’re a consistent claimant, your rates are going to be high. It isn’t unusual for a homeowner to file up to two claims in a 10-year period, but more than one or two in a three-year time span and the insurance company will think you’re a high risk.
  • Don’t submit claims for what is really a home-maintenance project. (small incidents) Also, a better maintained home gets better premiums.
  • Call a restoration company like SERVPRO to provide estimates on your damages. They will let you know if the damage is less or more than your deductible. Base on their estimates, you can decide whether to file a claim.

Business Interruption how to Stay Open

3/16/2020 (Permalink)

Operating a business is no simple task. It is a complex, time-consuming venture that requires being ready for anything. When a disaster strikes that requires a rebuild, businesses can gain peace of mind by having business interruption insurance. Instead of worrying about paying the bills and closing the doors to income, this add-on insurance can help keep a business afloat and make it easier to get back to normal.

Typical Coverage

When a rebuild is necessary due to flooding or water damage, fire or other natural disasters, time becomes a challenge. A closed business for an extended period of time could result in the business failing. While all policies are a little different depending on the insurer, interruption insurance often covers the following:

  • Lost Profits – Get reimbursed for lost earnings based on previous performance.
  • Static Costs – Day-to-day operating expenses.
  • Temporary Relocation – If it is possible to operate from another location, many policies will cover this cost.
  • Employee Wages – Keeping employees is key to succeeding. This allows for payroll to be met.
  • Taxes – No matter what happens, taxes are due. This coverage can eliminate the headache of additional penalties.
  • Loan payments – Even if there is no income, it’s important to pay loans on time. Business interruption helps you stay on track with debtors.

Additional Peace of Mind

A disaster quickly becomes an eye-opening experience. If equipment or machinery needs to be replaced, that often means training people to use it. Depending on your policy, this add-on may help cover some of those costs. It also works with your primary commercial property insurance. While the main policy will cover the physical damage, the interruption portion will ease the burden of the immediate financial damage.
While no business expects to have to rebuild, anything can happen. Adding a little extra insurance can go a long way in keeping your business thriving.

Do you need to clean your ducts at your commercial business?

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

Duct cleaning generally refers to the cleaning of various heating and cooling system components of forced air systems, including the supply and return air ducts and registers, grilles and diffusers, heat exchangers heating and cooling coils, condensate drain pans (drip pans), fan motor and fan housing, and the air handling unit housing.

If not properly installed, maintained and operated, these components may become contaminated with particles of dust, pollen or other debris. If moisture is present, the potential for microbiological growth (e.g., mold) is increased and spores from such growth may be released into the air of your commercial business. Some of these contaminants may cause allergic reactions or other symptoms in people if they are exposed to them.

Ventilation systems are often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality. Make it a priority to inspect the ductwork of your business.

If your HVAC has been operating for some time without attention, it could be circulating one or more of the following:

  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Odors
  • Dirt and debris
  • Other contaminants

The benefits of servicing your HVAC unit include:

  • It helps to restore peak energy efficiency.
  • May help to eliminate offensive odors.
  • It helps reduce the potential for mold growth.

How to be Prepared for Tornado Season

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

How To Prepare For A Tornado

Step 1: Plan

To protect your property, your family, and yourself during a tornado, it’s useful to develop a plan before the tornado hits. Make sure everyone is familiar with this plan.

As part of the plan, gather contact information and important documents in one place.

Contact information: You should record contact information for:

  • Family members – personal cell phones
  • Workplaces
  • Schools
  • Babysitters
  • Utility companies
  • Any other relevant contact details (such as family friends)

By recording all of these, you can contact friends, family members, and other important people at any time.

Important documents: Your plan should contain copies of:

  • Birth certificates
  • Social security cards
  • Insurance policies
  • Photos of your property, for insurance purposes

These documents will be vital if you need to evacuate the area or file an insurance claim following a tornado.

You should also create multiple evacuation plans, in case you need to leave the area and one route is not accessible.

Step 2: Build an emergency kit

The second step to preparing for a tornado is to make an emergency kit. Emergency kits are helpful in the event you lose power or other utilities, get injured, or become trapped. An emergency kit should include:

  • Enough water and food for at least three days per person
  • A device for communication (such as a radio)
  • First aid supplies
  • Spare clothes
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries
  • Toiletries
  • Maps of the local area
  • Medications

How many supplies you need depends on the size of your family. Be sure to pay extra attention to any special circumstances within your family; any infants, medical conditions, or pets will require extra resources. Take all this into account when preparing your emergency kit.

Step 3: Identify shelter areas, or build a safe room

Another way to prepare for a tornado and stay safe when a tornado hits is to identify or build a safe place in your home to take shelter. Your shelter area or safe room should:

  • Be on the lowest floor
  • Have no windows
  • Be as close to the center of the building as possible
  • Contain your emergency kit

For these reasons, basements tend to make good shelter areas. If you don’t have a basement, a centrally located bathroom or closet also works.

Call SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Counties (864)-229-6610, we are here to help with all storm damage cleanup. Stay safe this season!

Kids and Thunderstorms

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

Kids often get afraid when a thunderstorm rolls in. Thunder and lightning are often on the top of the list of fears for younger children. Because of the damage that severe thunderstorms and tornadoes can cause, many adults have a healthy fear of them too. After all, about 212 people are killed in thunderstorms each year, mostly from lightning and flash flooding.

 Thunderstorm Risks

Although many people simply worry about hail damage during thunderstorms, it is important to realize that other, often more deadly risks from thunderstorms, can come from:

  • Driving during blinding rain.
  • Lightning, which can strike as far as 10 miles from an area of rainfall.
  • Flash flooding, which is most common during slow-moving thunderstorms, and can cause fast-moving water to flow down what used to be dry creek beds or slow-moving creeks or rivers, catching kids in the fast-moving water.
  • Strong straight-line winds, which can knock over trees and damage some buildings.
  • Tornadoes, which can damage or destroy all but the most secure buildings.

To get updates before or during a severe thunderstorm warning or severe thunderstorm watch in your area and other severe weather, in addition to watching the news, consider getting a battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio.

Many types are available, from a desktop weather radio that can alert you to severe weather, portable weather radios that can help you monitor the weather when you are on the go and even hand-crank radios with NOAA that you can use when during a power outage and when your batteries are out.

A weather alert radio is especially important since thunderstorms can occur so quickly, and sometimes pop up in the middle of the night when your family is sleeping.

When there's Thunder there's Lightning

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

Lightning Risks and Safety Tips

Lightning causes thunder, so if you hear thunder, there is lightning nearby. And since lightning can strike as far as 10 miles from a thunderstorm, it is important to try and figure out how far lightning is far you and your family, instead of simply waiting for it to start raining until you seek shelter.

How do you figure out how far the lightning is? A general rule of thumb is that you can figure out the distance between you and a lightning strike if you count the seconds in between seeing a lightning strike, hearing thunder, and then divide the time by 5. So if you count 10 seconds in between a lightning strike and a thunderclap, then the lightning is only about 2 miles away and you should seek shelter in a car or building.

In general, you should make sure that you can count to at least 30 in between seeing lightning strikes and hearing thunder, which means that the lightning is about 6 miles away. And to be safe, stay indoors for at least 30 minutes after hearing thunder for the last time, which should give the thunderstorm plenty of time to move out of your area.

Other tips to keep safe when lightning is nearby include:

  • Seek shelter inside a fully enclosed building that has wiring or plumbing, which would usually not include a shed, open garage, or pavilion.
  • Seek shelter in a hard-topped car, truck, or van, etc., if a safe building is not available
  • If you can't get inside a safe building or vehicle, seek shelter in a low-lying area that is not prone to flash flooding, squatting low to the ground, and stay away from tall trees or metal poles.
  • Avoid riding on anything metal during a severe thunderstorm with close lightning, such as a bicycle or golf cart.
  • Stay off corded phones and avoid taking a bath or shower, as telephone lines and metal pipes can conduct electricity if your home is struck by lightning.
  • Seek emergency medical attention to you see someone hit by lightning and start first aid, including CPR if necessary.

Although there are now apps on smartphones, like WeatherBug's Spark that can warn you when lightning is near, just remember the old safety slogan, "When thunder roars, go indoors!"

Our Experts Discuss Our Procedures After A Fire

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

Dealing with the odor following a fire can be offensive and difficult to eliminate. After even the smallest kitchen fire, odor particles permeate throughout your home into every nook and cranny, creating long-lasting smells. While airing out your home does assist with ventilation, which helps with odor control, it is not enough to eliminate malodor after a fire.

Fire and Odor removal is difficult at any time of year, but summer and winter present unique challenges. The weather can have an impact on odors after a fire. During winter, it may be difficult to properly ventilate your home, especially if it was a minor fire where you do not need to leave your house. Having open windows and doors to ventilate is not possible if you are trying to function in your home. During summer, the odor may present itself again due to a rise in humidity.

There are four basic procedures for deodorization. There is not a one size fits all method since odor problems tend to be unique and do not always come from one source. SERVPRO restoration technicians create a plan to suit your individual needs following a fire.

First, it is imperative to remove the odor source instead of trying to deodorize the source. Technicians identify and remove charred materials before deodorizing. Debris may give off smoke odors if it is contaminated. Although every situation is different, this first step of removal is standard with most fire restorations.

Then, SERVPRO technicians clean surfaces containing odor-causing residues. Odor particles may keep generating if not adequately cleaned. If the fire in your kitchen was a grease fire, there might be a lot of residue on the stone, vent hood, filters, walls, etc. All of these things need cleaning to ensure deodorization is effective. Sometimes, the whole house needs cleaning since smoke odors often penetrate throughout the structure.

The third procedure is to recreate the conditions that caused odor penetration, except instead of smoke clouding the house technicians use a deodorizing fog or "smoke" from a thermal fogger to attack the odors. This procedure is for the most offensive and stubborn smells as residents and pets need to vacate the home during fogging. The last method of sealing is also reserved for difficult situations. Technicians seal surfaces by painting over walls to trap malodors under the fresh coat of paint, or they seal duct surfaces within the air handling system that are unreachable.

The above procedures to eliminate malodors after a house fire is typically linked with mechanical means. During the cleanup segment of the service, hydroxyl generators and air scrubbers are often deployed in strategic interior locations to physically change the chemical composition of airborne particulates and compounds.

Recovering Fragile and Porous Materials from your Home after a Fire Damage

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

One of the challenges you are going to face when performing fire restoration is the considerable amount of different materials and surfaces you may encounter. Your home is full of fabrics, stones, woodwork, and plastics. Each of these categories divides further into even more considerations. Silk, for example, cannot respond well to the same restoration procedure as a robust polyester or cotton. Smoke does not delineate between different materials but can bond with some and not others.

Pre-testing and due diligence when applying cleaning methods to a fire damage home are both essential. While agitation may be an easy option to dislodge and remove soils, it can spread costs further or cause harm to the materials you are attempting to recover. Take care to read the instructions of both the article you are trying to clean as well as the cleaning solution itself. Oil-based cleaners work with oil-based stains. Water-based cleaners, on the other hand, work with water-based soiling.

At SERVPRO, our technicians undergo years of training and qualifications to assess your home after a fire confidently. While we have extensive access to mechanical cleaning equipment, there are many parts of your home that may not suit abrasive cleaning. Carpeting and expensive fabrics, for example, may lose much of their texture and fibers during aggressive vacuuming or rotary cleaning. These fibers may also clog up your vacuum cleaner or extractor, causing problems.

Our routine for sensitive materials and fabrics is to use absorption. Absorption incorporates the dispersal of power directly onto the surface of the material. SERVPRO can adapt truck-mounted extractors to disperse powders quicker over a large surface area. These powders absorb odor particles as well as smoke. SERVPRO technicians find they are effective at recovering porous materials like marble, brick, and concrete, as well as fabrics, upholstery, and drapery. Once soiling is absorbed, we can use light vacuums to remove them from the affected material.

Fragile materials that are a part of your home environment could suffer permanent harm without the correct cleaning method. Contact SERVPRO of Greenwood, Abbeville & McCormick Co. at 864-229-6610.

When Your Apartment Sprinkler System Goes Off

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

The overhead sprinkler system in your apartment complex is there to keep tenants safe from possible fire damage, and everyone is glad the system is in place. However, when it does go off, there is going to be a mess to clean up. What should you do when your apartment complex sprinkler system goes off?

You know that it is important to handle any sort of water issues immediately in order to avoid the costly problems that can arise from your damp property, such as mold and mildew. Keep in mind that any intense heat will cause your sprinklers to discharge, and the sprinkler heads contain a temperature-sensitive mechanism that can only be activated when the temperature at the sprinkler head exceeds the allowable range, so make sure your tenants understand that they need to be careful with heat inside their units. You will also want to make sure that residents know never to hang items from the sprinkler heads, as this can damage them, as well as cause them to go off unexpectedly.

Here are a few cleanup tips to consider when cleaning up after your overhead sprinkler system goes off:

  • Prompt professional assistance following a sprinkler discharge could be vital in saving your property and your residents’ belongings from permanent damage. Your actions in the first 24-48 hours can save you significant time and money and eliminate subsequent mold growth.
  • Professional followup will also be a big help when it comes to odors, and they can evaluate the water damage and potential for mold growth in hidden areas as well as ensure that any affected building materials are dry prior to work area rebuilding.
  • We recommend that you hire an independent water damage and mold remediation expert to represent you during planning, response, and closeout, and work together with their insurance carrier.
  • Water within the sprinkler system is stagnant and non-potable, and the water picks up and absorbs oils and other contaminants within the piping, resulting in discoloration and odors from its sedimentary state. Cleanup actions typically not only involve moisture remediation but also involve surface cleaning from stains as well as additional measures to alleviate odors.
  • Prompt action for cleaning is essential when it comes to fabric and textile items that have been affected to minimize permanent staining and damage.

How To Prevent Flooding In Your Home

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

We all know what your home could look like after a flood or during heavy rainfall. A homeowner can lose precious belongings, and sometimes family members and pets can be at risk since events such as these are usually unexpected. Being prepared will help you and your loved ones to remain safe.

With that in mind, here some tips to help you prevent flooding in your home:

  • INSPECTION. Take a good look around your house to ensure that you are prepared for wet weather. Check exterior doors to see if they fit as tightly as they should and that both doors and windows are properly weather-stripped. A small leak can easily turn into a small flood. Your driveway needs to have a well-planned drainage system so entering and exiting your home can be safe even during wet weather. If you know you’ll see a lot of run-off from the street or yard, or perhaps bodies of water in your neighborhood, you should consider using sandbags. Homes and low-lying buildings near a flooding body of water can end up being at risk, so you will want to plan ahead to prevent that from happening.
  • COMMUNICATE WITH PUBLIC SERVICES. Drainage areas that are maintained by the city or county are monitored, especially during heavy rains. If these spots begin to overflow, make sure to contact your city representatives immediately to keep them informed and updated. If there is a problem developing, you can take steps to sandbag vulnerable areas around your home and buildings on your property.
  • INTERIORS. Some flooding isn’t caused by weather; it’s caused by an equipment failure. Make sure your plumbing and appliances are regularly inspected and maintained so that you don’t experience this kind of flooding. Take a look at basements and garages regularly so that you can stay on top of things. It’s all about preparedness.

Is your Commercial Property affected by Mold

3/10/2020 (Permalink)

Stachybotrys chartarum is the type of mold often called “black mold” or “toxic mold”. Sensational news reports warn about the dangers of black mold and these stories can be alarming and confusing. Any mold in your property should be treated with caution – stay out of affected areas and don’t touch or disturb the mold.

How Do I Tell If It’s Black Mold?

Since many types of mold can produce allergens and irritants, you should contact a qualified mold remediation company regardless of the color or type of mold. In many instances, multiple types of mold can exist in the same property or structure. If you suspect that you have a mold problem, contact your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional immediately.

If You See Signs of Mold, Call Us Today   864-229-6610

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  •  Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  •  Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  •  Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce toxins harmful to humans and pets.
  •  Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  •  Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  •  Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Does Your Greenwood Home Have A Mold Damage Problem

10/18/2017 (Permalink)

In Greenwood, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise "mold removal" and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Greenwood, Abbeville, & McCormick Smoke and Soot Cleanup

8/29/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Greenwood, Abbeville, McCormick Home
